The Burning River Room

Overlooking the river that once burned, this suite tells a powerful story of transformation. The infamous Cuyahoga River fire of 1969 became a turning point for environmental awareness in America. Once so polluted that it literally caught fire multiple times, the river’s burning waters captured national attention and helped spark the creation of the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and the Clean Water Act of 1972. This room also pays homage to Carl Stokes, the first Black mayor of a major U.S. city, whose leadership helped bring environmental and social justice to the forefront. Today, the Cuyahoga River stands as a symbol of renewal, and this suite reflects that journey—from industrial pollution to a thriving, revitalized waterway.
